Net Fisheries
Net Fishery | Ocean Beach Net Fishery
Inshore net fishers harvest barramundi, mullet, threadfin and other key coastal species. These small-scale, highly regulated operators play a vital role in providing fresh, local seafood to Queensland communities. Seperated into two fisheries – the East Coast in-shore now operate in a limited NX Fishery. While the Gulf of Carpentaria underwent significant reform in 2024, continues to operate under a N3 symbol. All commercial fishing vessels in Queensland require Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS).
The East Coast NX Fishery operates with onboard camera’s to independently validate information reported in logbooks, including interactions with protected species. There are management zones/areas and quotas that apply to each. There are many Net Free Zones in Queensland.
Mullet is also another prized species. Multi generating fishing is common within these fisheries, skills and knowledge passed down over many years. Selective equipment and targetted species. Low food miles. Watch a 2nd generation fisher on the link below.
